Missouri Governor May Call National Guard Back to Ferguson

As Ferguson, and the world, awaits the grand jury’s decision on whether or not to charge officer Darren Wilson in the death of Michael Brown, Missouri Governor Jay Nixon is considering calling up the Nation Guard. Gov. Nixon expects protests after the grand jury’s decision is announced. In August, the Guard was part of the law enforcement contingency charged with handling the protests following the death of Michael Brown.

Many criticized the National Guard’s involvement and saw it as an unnecessary military-style approach. This week, demonstrators claimed that calling back the National Guard is an overreaction, and may only heighten tensions. Gov. Nixon maintains his primary role is “keeping the people of Missouri safe.”
